Your RTO Data Reporting Questions, Answered

Not sure what your RTO needs to report or how to prepare your data? Start with answers to some common RTO data reporting questions.

What is AVETMISS reporting and why is it required?

AVETMISS is the current national data standard used for collecting and reporting vocational education and training information. RTOs use AVETMISS-compliant data to report student, enrolment, training and outcome information as part of their Total VET Activity obligations.

Does every RTO in Australia need to submit AVETMISS data?

Under the current reporting framework, RTOs are required to report Total VET Activity data at least annually. Depending on funding and reporting arrangements, data may be submitted directly to NCVER or through a state or territory training authority.

When is AVETMISS reporting due?

Reporting deadlines vary by collection and reporting pathway. For example, RTOs reporting 2025 Total VET Activity data directly to NCVER were required to submit by 28 February 2026. RTOs should confirm the deadlines applicable to their reporting arrangements each year.

What is Total VET Activity reporting?

Total VET Activity reporting captures information about nationally recognised training activity. Under the current AVETMISS framework, RTOs must maintain the data required for applicable student, enrolment, training and outcome reporting.

What are AVETMISS NAT files?

NAT files are structured text files used for AVETMISS reporting. They contain specified information about areas such as the training organisation, delivery locations, programs, subjects, clients, training activity and program completions.

How do I fix AVETMISS validation errors?

Start by reviewing the validation results in NCVER’s AVETMISS Validation Software (AVS) and identifying the records associated with each error. The underlying information should then be corrected before the data is validated again. NCVER provides specific resources for identifying and fixing common validation errors.

Do I need to report if my RTO delivered no nationally accredited training?

Yes. Under the current reporting arrangements, an RTO that has no reportable nationally accredited training activity may still be required to submit a nil return. For the 2025 reporting year, ASQA required RTOs that delivered no nationally accredited training to provide a nil return directly to NCVER.

Does AVETMISS-compliant software mean my data is automatically correct?

No. AVETMISS-compliant software can produce correctly formatted AVETMISS files, but it may not check every data value. Your data should still be reviewed and validated before submission.
